Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) Registration: How It Works for Stud Dogs

The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) is Canada's national purebred dog registration body, equivalent to the AKC in the United States. CKC registration is required to show in CKC conformation events, compete in CKC performance sports, and produce CKC-registered litters. If you are using a CKC-registered stud dog — or if your dam is CKC-registered — understanding how the registration system works is important.

CKC vs AKC: The Key Differences

Both the CKC and AKC are internationally recognised purebred registries, and many dogs are dual-registered with both. However, they are separate organisations with separate registration numbers and their own breed standards for some breeds.

Cross-border litters: If a CKC dam is bred to an AKC stud (or vice versa), the litter can typically be registered with both organisations if both parents have proof of registration with their respective clubs. Contact each club's registration department to confirm current requirements for cross-registry litters.

CKC Stud Dog Registration Requirements

To register a litter with the CKC, you need:

The stud owner typically provides a signed stud service certificate to the dam owner after successful breeding. This document confirms the breeding took place and includes the stud's CKC registration number, which is required for litter registration.

CKC Litter Registration Process

  1. The breeding occurs and stud service certificate is issued
  2. Whelping occurs; count the puppies
  3. Dam owner completes CKC litter registration form
  4. Submit form with fee within a set period (currently 6 months from whelping date for standard registration)
  5. Individual puppy registration forms can be completed once the litter is registered

International Registrations

Dogs registered with FCI-affiliated clubs (including most European registries and the CKC) can often be recognised by each other's member clubs. A CKC-registered dog bred in Canada can be considered for AKC recognition through the AKC's foreign dog registration process. Contact AKC registration services for current requirements.
