Fluffy French Bulldog Genetics: The L4 Long Coat Gene Explained

Fluffy French Bulldogs — the long-coated variety with silky hair, tufted ears, and a distinctive soft coat — have become one of the most sought-after and expensive coat types in the breed. Unlike standard Frenchies, fluffies carry a specific long-coat mutation called L4 that is distinct from the general L locus mutations seen in other breeds.

What Is the L4 Mutation?

The fluffy coat in French Bulldogs is caused by a specific recessive mutation in the FGF5 gene. Unlike some other breeds where multiple mutations at the L locus can independently cause long coat, French Bulldog fluffy coat is caused by one particular variant — commonly referred to as L4 by breed-specific testing panels.

Because it is recessive, a dog must carry two copies (L4/L4) to express the fluffy coat. A dog with one copy (L4/l) is a carrier — it will look like a standard Frenchie but can produce fluffy puppies when bred to another carrier or to a fluffy dog.

How to Breed for Fluffy Puppies

Fluffy x Fluffy (L4/L4 x L4/L4): 100% of puppies will be fluffy. The most reliable way to produce an entire fluffy litter, assuming both parents are confirmed L4/L4 by DNA test.

Fluffy x Carrier (L4/L4 x L4/l): 50% fluffy, 50% carriers. Half the litter will be fluffy.

Carrier x Carrier (L4/l x L4/l): 25% fluffy, 50% carriers, 25% non-carriers. One quarter of the litter will express the fluffy coat.

Fluffy x Non-carrier (L4/L4 x l/l): 0% fluffy, 100% carriers. No fluffy puppies, but all puppies will be carriers.

Testing for L4

Embark, PawPrint Genetics, and Animal Genetics all test for the French Bulldog fluffy coat mutation. When ordering a test for a Frenchie, confirm the lab includes L4 specifically — not just a general long-coat panel. Results will report the dog as L4/L4 (fluffy), L4/l (carrier), or l/l (non-carrier / non-fluffy).

Fluffy Coat and Health

The fluffy coat mutation itself does not cause health problems. However, French Bulldogs as a breed have significant health considerations — brachycephalic airway syndrome, spinal issues, and heat sensitivity — that affect all Frenchies regardless of coat type. Responsible fluffy Frenchie breeding requires the same health testing as standard Frenchies: brucellosis, full DNA health panel, and ideally cardiac and spinal screening.

Market Considerations

Fluffy French Bulldogs command a significant price premium — often $5,000 to $15,000+ depending on colour and lineage. This premium makes L4 testing especially important. Misrepresenting a carrier as a fluffy, or a non-carrier as a carrier, is both dishonest and has significant financial consequences. Always test before listing stud service or puppies as fluffy or fluffy carrier.
