You do not need to pay for a stud dog contract. You do not need to hire a lawyer for a standard cash-fee breeding. What you need is a clear, complete agreement that covers the seven things that matter: the fee, the tie, the return service, brucellosis testing, health disclosures, litter registration, and signatures.

Why a Free Contract Is Still a Good Contract

The quality of a stud dog contract is not measured by what it costs — it is measured by what it covers. A $500 lawyer-drafted contract that skips the return service voiding clause is worse than this free template, which includes it.

The clauses in this contract have been refined through thousands of real-world breedings. The return service conditions exist because of real disputes. The brucellosis testing requirement exists because breeders have lost dogs to preventable infections. The health testing disclosure section exists because misrepresentation is the most common ground for stud dog disputes.

Free does not mean low quality. It means you do not have to pay to protect yourself.

Before You Use This Contract

A few things to sort out before printing:

Know your stud fee. Research current market rates for your breed and health testing level before you name a price. Use The Stud Dog's browse feature to see what comparable studs in your breed are charging.

Have your brucellosis test scheduled. Both dogs need a current negative test (within 30 days) before any natural breeding. Schedule it now — do not wait until the day of the breeding.

Prepare your health test copies. Gather PDFs of all OFA results, DNA test certificates, and CAER reports before the breeding date. The dam owner should receive copies.

Decide on return service terms. The most common arrangement is a full return service if no live puppy results within a 12-month window. Decide upfront whether you will offer this and what the conditions are.

Note: This Agreement covers the stud service only. Pregnancy and live puppies are not guaranteed.

RETURN SERVICE If no live puppy results from this service, the Stud Owner will provide one (1) free return breeding, subject to all of the following:

Negative pregnancy confirmed in writing by a licensed vet
Documentation provided to Stud Owner within [35] days of the last breeding date
Return breeding requested within [12] months of this agreement's date
Same Dam only — this benefit is not transferable
Voided if the missed conception is caused by: (a) the Dam's documented infertility, (b) the Dam Owner's failure to breed during the confirmed fertile window using progesterone testing, or (c) the Dam Owner failing to provide the Dam for the breeding appointment

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this contract need to be notarised? No. Notarisation is not required for a stud dog contract to be legally valid. Both signatures with printed names and dates are sufficient.

Can I use this contract for artificial insemination? Yes — adjust Section 3 (Breeding Service) to reflect the AI type (fresh chilled, fresh, or frozen semen) and remove the tie guarantee language. For shipped semen, add a clause specifying who pays for collection, freeze, and shipping.

What if the other party refuses to sign? Do not proceed with the breeding. A party who refuses to sign a reasonable contract is either not serious or is specifically objecting to a clause that protects you. Find out which one and resolve it before any breeding takes place.

Is this contract enforceable? Yes, in all US states, for agreements within the statutory limits of small claims court. For stud fees above $10,000–$15,000 (which varies by state), a lawyer-reviewed contract is advisable.
