How to Transfer AKC Registration: Step-by-Step Guide

When a purebred AKC-registered dog changes ownership, the registration must be transferred to reflect the new owner. This is not automatic — both the buyer and seller have responsibilities in the transfer process. Failing to transfer registration is surprisingly common and can cause problems when you need to breed, show, or certify the dog.

Why Transfers Matter

AKC registration records track the official owner of a dog. If you purchase an AKC-registered dog and never transfer the registration, the previous owner remains the official owner of record. This can create complications when:

How to Transfer AKC Registration

Step 1: Receive the signed registration certificate. When you buy an AKC-registered dog, the seller should sign the back of the original registration certificate (or the application for registration if the dog is from a recent litter). This signed document authorises the transfer.

Step 2: Complete the transfer section. The back of the AKC registration certificate has a transfer section. The new owner fills in their name and address, and the seller signs as the transferring party.

Step 3: Submit to AKC with the fee. Mail the completed certificate to AKC registration services, or submit online through the AKC website if you have the necessary information. The transfer fee (currently $35 for online, more for expedited or paper processing) must accompany the form.

Step 4: Receive updated registration. AKC will issue a new registration certificate showing the updated owner information, typically within 4–8 weeks by mail or faster if processed online.
