Huskydoodle Stud Dog Guide: Health Tests, Temperament & What to Know
The Huskydoodle (also called Siberpoo or Poosky) — a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Standard Poodle — is an increasingly popular designer breed known for striking appearance and a mix of Husky personality with Poodle intelligence. Selecting a Huskydoodle stud requires careful consideration of both breeds' distinct health risks.
Size Expectations for Huskydoodle Litters
Siberian Huskies typically weigh 35–60 lbs. Standard Poodles weigh 45–70 lbs. F1 Huskydoodles typically land between 40–70 lbs at maturity. There is no reliable Miniature Huskydoodle without using a smaller Poodle — a Miniature Poodle stud can be paired with a Husky dam, but the size difference must be managed safely (AI is recommended for this pairing).
Health Tests Required for Huskydoodle Studs
From the Siberian Husky side:
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy — DNA test and CAER exam (Huskies have specific PRA forms distinct from other breeds)
- Hereditary Cataracts — CAER exam (annual), DNA test
- Hip evaluation (OFA or PennHIP)
- Degenerative Myelopathy — DNA test
From the Poodle side:
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (prcd-PRA) — DNA test
- Neonatal Encephalopathy (NEwS) — DNA test
- Von Willebrand's Disease type I — DNA test
- Hip evaluation
- Sebaceous Adenitis
The critical eye tests for Siberian Husky lines should not be skipped. Huskies are one of the highest-risk breeds for juvenile cataracts, and this risk can be passed to offspring if the stud has not been cleared.
Eye Color Genetics in Huskydoodles
Siberian Huskies can have blue eyes, brown eyes, or one of each (heterochromia). The blue eye gene in Huskies is associated with the ALX4 region and is inherited separately from the merle pattern. Huskydoodle puppies can inherit blue eyes from the Husky parent — this is safe and does not indicate merle.
If your stud or dam is merle (common in some Poodle programs), never breed merle × merle. But blue-eyed Huskydoodles are not merle — the blue eyes come from the Husky's ALX4 gene, not a merle pattern.
Temperament Considerations
Siberian Huskies are high-energy, independent, and can be escape artists. This temperament does not disappear in Huskydoodle crosses. A Huskydoodle stud who is extremely high-drive or shows resource guarding should be evaluated carefully — these traits are heritable and will appear in some percentage of the litter.
The Poodle's intelligence and trainability tempers the Husky influence in most F1s, but buyers of Huskydoodle puppies should be prepared for an active, smart dog.
What to Ask a Huskydoodle Stud Owner
- Has the stud completed a CAER eye exam within the last 12 months?
- What are the PRA-prcd and Hereditary Cataracts DNA results?
- What is his hip rating?
- What is the stud's temperament like around unfamiliar people and dogs?
- What is his adult weight and expected litter size range?
