Labradoodle Stud Dog: Australian vs American Lines, Coat Testing, and Health Panel
The Labradoodle was one of the first intentionally created designer breeds, developed in Australia in the late 1980s as a low-shedding guide dog candidate. Today, the Labradoodle is one of the most popular breeds in the world — and also one of the most variable.
Australian Labradoodle vs American Labradoodle
American Labradoodle
A cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle. The same generation structure as Goldendoodles (F1, F1b, F2, multigen). Variable coats in F1, more predictable in F1b and beyond.
Australian Labradoodle (ALD)
The Australian Labradoodle incorporates not just Labrador and Poodle genetics but historically also Cocker Spaniel, Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever, and other breeds. This multi-breed foundation creates more consistent coat and temperament.
Recognized Australian Labradoodle breed associations (WALA, ALAA, ALCA) maintain registries and breed standards. If you are breeding Australian Labradoodles, your stud should be registered with a recognized ALD association.
Coat DNA Testing
Furnishings (IC Locus)
- FF: Two copies — ideal for multigen breeding.
- Ff: One copy — produces some furnished and some unfurnished offspring.
- ff (Flat Coat): No furnishings. Higher-shedding offspring.
Curl (KRT71)
Controls coat curl. Testing allows prediction of wavy vs curly offspring.
Fleece vs Wool Coats in Australian Labradoodles
- Fleece coat: Soft, wavy or loosely curly. Low shedding. The most desirable coat for most buyers.
- Wool coat: Tight curls, dense, more like a Poodle coat. Very low shedding.
- Hair coat (flat coat): Straighter, higher shedding.
