Schnoodle Stud Dog Guide: Health Tests, Sizes & Coat Genetics
The Schnoodle — a cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle — is a smart, low-shedding companion that comes in a range of sizes from Toy to Giant. Selecting the right Schnoodle stud requires understanding both parent breeds' health needs and the genetics that determine coat type and adult size.
Schnoodle Sizes and Stud Selection
Schnoodles come in multiple sizes based on the Schnauzer and Poodle sizes used:
| Dam | Stud | Expected Adult Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Miniature Schnauzer | Toy or Miniature Poodle | 10–20 lbs |
| Standard Schnauzer | Miniature or Standard Poodle | 20–45 lbs |
| Giant Schnauzer | Standard Poodle | 55–80 lbs |
Never use a significantly larger male on a small dam — safe size ratios matter for whelping. For cross-size pairings, AI is often the safer approach.
Health Tests Required for Schnoodle Studs
From the Schnauzer parent:
- Mycobacterium Avium Complex (MAC) — DNA test, critical for Miniature Schnauzers
- Hereditary Cataracts — DNA test
- Type II Diabetes (glycogen storage) — DNA test for Miniature Schnauzers
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy — DNA test
- Hip evaluation for Standard and Giant lines
From the Poodle parent:
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (prcd-PRA) — DNA test
- Neonatal Encephalopathy (NEwS) — DNA test
- Von Willebrand's Disease type I — DNA test
- Hip evaluation (Standard Poodle)
- Sebaceous Adenitis (OFA evaluation)
A comprehensive Schnoodle stud should be tested for disease risks from both contributing breeds. Embark and PawPrint Genetics both offer panels that cover Schnauzer and Poodle diseases simultaneously.
Coat Genetics for Schnoodle Programs
Schnauzers naturally have furnishings (beard, mustache, eyebrows) due to their wire coat. Poodles also have furnishings. This means all Schnoodle crosses should produce furnished offspring — making the furnishings gene less of a concern than it is in other Doodle programs.
Curl gene: Schnauzers are straight-coated (CC), while Poodles are curly (cc). All F1 Schnoodles are Cc — wavy coat. For F1b or multigenerational programs, selecting a cc Poodle stud will tighten the curl and reduce shedding further.
Color: Schnauzers come in salt and pepper, black and silver, and solid black. When combined with Poodle color genes, Schnoodles can be black, silver, gray, apricot, white, or parti. If color is important to your buyers, research the stud's color genotype.
What to Ask a Schnoodle Stud Owner
- What size Schnauzer and Poodle are in this dog's background?
- Has he been tested for MAC, Hereditary Cataracts, and PRA?
- What are his hip and elbow ratings?
- What is his adult weight and build?
- What color genetics are known on him?
