Weimaraner Health Testing Requirements for Stud Dogs
Weimaraners are elegant, versatile hunting dogs known as the "Grey Ghost." They carry specific inherited health concerns including spinal dysraphism and a unique immune system challenge called Weimaraner Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
The Weimaraner Club of America (WCA) participates in the OFA CHIC program.
CHIC Requirements for Weimaraners
- OFA Hip Evaluation
- OFA Elbow Evaluation
- OFA Eye Examination (CAER)
- OFA Thyroid Evaluation
- DNA test for Spinal Dysraphism (SD)
Spinal Dysraphism
SD is a developmental spinal cord abnormality causing a "bunny-hopping" gait and hindlimb weakness. Severity ranges from mild to severe. DNA testing identifies Clear, Carrier, and Affected status. Carriers are healthy; breed Carrier × Clear to prevent affected offspring.
Bloat/GDV
Weimaraners are a large, deep-chested breed with elevated GDV risk. No genetic test; discuss prophylactic gastropexy with veterinarians. Select from longer-lived pedigrees.
Hip and Elbow Evaluation
OFA Good or Excellent hips; OFA Normal elbows. Hip and elbow dysplasia occur in Weimaraners.
Thyroid Evaluation
Autoimmune thyroiditis occurs in Weimaraners. OFA thyroid panel evaluates thyroid antibody levels.
Weimaraner Immunodeficiency Syndrome
An immune deficiency unique to Weimaraners causing recurrent infections in young dogs. Complex genetics; no direct DNA test. Select from healthy pedigrees without early death from infections.
Summary
A responsible Weimaraner stud dog should have: OFA Good/Excellent hips, OFA Normal elbows, OFA CAER eye exam, OFA thyroid panel, and SD DNA testing. SD is completely preventable through DNA testing. GDV risk and immune health should be evaluated through pedigree history.
