Weimaraner Stud Dog: Health Testing, Spinal Dysraphism DNA, and What to Look For
The Weimaraner is one of the most striking sporting dogs ever developed. That distinctive silver-gray coat, pale blue or amber eyes, and powerfully athletic build have earned it a devoted following since German royalty bred them for big game hunting.
Health Testing Requirements
OFA Hip Evaluation — Good or Excellent
Hip dysplasia is one of the most common conditions in Weimaraners. OFA at 24 months, Good or Excellent, is non-negotiable.
Spinal Dysraphism — DNA Test (Critical)
Spinal Dysraphism (SD) is a congenital spinal cord defect in Weimaraners. Affected puppies have a characteristic bunny-hop gait with hind limb incoordination and cannot walk normally. A DNA test is available through several veterinary genetics laboratories. Clear, Carrier, or Affected.
- Affected dogs should not be bred.
- Carrier studs should only be bred to Clear dams.
- Clear studs are preferred.
This is the most important DNA test specific to the breed.
CAER Eye Examination — Annual
Several hereditary eye conditions occur including distichiasis and entropion.
Cardiac Evaluation
Tricuspid valve dysplasia and other congenital cardiac conditions occur. OFA cardiac evaluation recommended.
Thyroid Testing — OFA Thyroid Panel
Autoimmune thyroiditis occurs in Weimaraners. Annual OFA thyroid panel recommended.
Bloat (GDV) Awareness
Weimaraners are deep-chested with elevated GDV risk. Discuss family history and recommend prophylactic gastropexy to buyers.
Weimaraner Color
Silver-Gray: The standard and most common color. AKC-accepted in all shades. Blue: A distinctly cooler, darker gray. AKC-registerable but disqualified from the conformation show ring. Many dedicated Weimaraner breeders do not breed for blue.
Hunting and Field Ability
Many serious Weimaraner breeders value field ability: AKC Hunting Test titles (JH, SH, MH), AKC Field Trial titles, and NAVHDA titles.
What Does a Weimaraner Stud Fee Cost?
Weimaraner stud fees in 2026 typically range from $800 to $3,000 depending on Spinal Dysraphism DNA (Clear valued), full health panel, field or conformation titles, and proven litter quality.
