Choosing Between Labrador Stud Dogs
Compare each Labrador stud's location, fee, registration, documented health clearances, and available DNA results. Hips, elbows, and eyes are useful starting points; ask which organization or veterinarian performed each evaluation and check the date and result rather than assuming every listing includes every test.
Labrador Health Testing Context
Labrador programs commonly discuss hip and elbow evaluations and an eye examination such as CAER. Breed-relevant DNA panels may include exercise-induced collapse (EIC), centronuclear myopathy (CNM), and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), among other tests. Results should be interpreted with the dam's results and by a qualified veterinarian or genetic counselor; a DNA result or listing badge is not a universal guarantee of health.
Local Labrador Service or Shipped Semen
Local service may simplify handling and timing when the stud is nearby. Chilled or frozen semen can broaden the pool when a local match is not suitable, but requires coordination among the breeder, reproductive veterinarian, and shipping facility. Confirm collection, storage, transport, timing, and the written contract before booking.
Black Labrador Color Notes
Black is one of the Labrador's recognized coat colors, but a black sire's appearance alone does not predict every puppy's color. The dam's B- and E-locus genetics also matter, and DNA results can be more informative than color labels. Use color as one comparison point, not a promise of inheritance.
